Press Release: Featured Artist at The Hotel Monaco in Salt Lake City

Art on display from January 30th – June 1st, 2015

Ran Stewart, local Utah artist will be the featured artist in the main lobby of the historic Hotel Monaco in downtown Salt Lake City. His work will be on display from January 30th through June 1st, 2015.  There will be an artist reception on February 20th from 6-9pm in the main lobby.

As part of a new program the Hotel Monaco is now featuring local Utah artists and participates in the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.  “We love giving our guests and local residents a taste of some of the amazing art Utah has to offer,” says Shawn Jackson, Sales Manager for the Kimpton Hotels and Resturant group that operates the Hotel Monaco. “Being part of the gallery stroll and showing local art in our lobby is a way for us to give back to the community and to be part of the vibrant downtown art culture.”

Stewart’s work is an exploration of the movement of our daily lives. Many of the pieces explore the human element within the ever moving and changing cityscape. Each piece begins with a still frame capture from simple videos shot from a cell phone. The artist then paints the impression of these images in high chroma key with a very limited palette.

“This body of work depicts our lives in motion. The images are a de-focused, high key interpretation of what we see everyday,” says Stewart. “The blurred motion imparts the energy of the moment. This process fascinates me, as a child riding in the back of the family station wagon on never ending road trips, I would stare out the window, squint my eyes and see the blurred motion. I’ve always wanted to capture this effect on canvas.”
